Why can a tilt-up tower foundation see different forces during raising?

The short answer

During raising, gravity and lifting forces act through changing geometry, while the tower base may function as a hinge rather than its final support condition. Their vector balance creates construction reactions that can differ substantially from upright operating loads. The foundation therefore needs the erection designer’s actual reactions, not only a completed-tower wind-load package.

Follow the changing gravity lever arm

When the assembly is inclined, its center of gravity can be horizontally offset from the hinge. That produces a gravity moment that changes with angle. The lifting system provides a balancing action through its own geometry.

The force needed depends on the line of action and leverage, not simply on total tower weight. A favorable force at one angle does not demonstrate adequacy throughout the movement.

Check the hinge load path locally

The base can receive combined horizontal, vertical and local connection actions. These must pass through pins, plates, anchors or other defined components into concrete and ground. The final grouted or fully restrained tower detail may not represent this temporary configuration.

Temporary lifting attachments can also introduce local actions absent from normal operation. A foundation that resists final overturning is not automatically verified for every construction reaction.

Obtain a reviewed stage-specific assessment

The responsible installation designer should provide the relevant force envelope or concurrent stage cases, reference points and configurations. The foundation and tower reviewers then verify the interfaces before erection.

This explanation does not provide a raising procedure, equipment selection or permission to use a tilt-up arrangement. Bergey’s manual demonstrates a manufacturer-specific system whose geometry is controlled; its forces and sequence are not transferable to MARSTON equipment. Confirm first that the selected turbine and tower are actually intended for the proposed erection method.
