How can uneven ground obstruct an otherwise clear tilt-down tower path?
The short answer
A clear plan-view area can still contain a three-dimensional obstruction. As a tower tilts, the rotor, tower members, attachments and handling equipment follow swept volumes relative to the hinge and terrain. A rise in ground, misplaced support or change in cross-slope can interfere even where no building or fence occupies the mapped footprint.
Use a shared elevation reference
Survey the hinge level, ground profile and proposed support locations along and across the assessed movement area. A ground line inferred from photographs or a single slope percentage may miss local humps, ditches or grade changes.
The lowest component during movement is not necessarily the tower centerline. Rotor geometry, brackets and the chosen assembly state determine which parts approach the ground first.
Compare the whole sweep with the actual method
The approved installation concept determines which components remain attached and how they are supported. A lowering envelope drawn for a bare tower cannot automatically represent the completed turbine assembly.
Also consider the space for associated lines and equipment. Changing a support height to clear one point can change other geometry and reactions. A simple radius equal to tower height does not resolve these interactions.
Resolve terrain conflicts before selecting the site
The installation designer should compare the three-dimensional movement envelope with surveyed conditions and establish a feasible arrangement. Alternatives may involve a different tower position, engineered ground preparation or another assessed installation method.
Do not start lowering to discover where interference occurs, and do not remove turbine components without applicable instructions. This question adds terrain and elevation analysis to the broader service-land requirement; it provides no lowering sequence or generic clearance. Confirm that a tilt-down tower arrangement is actually approved for the selected MARSTON turbine before reserving or reshaping its proposed service area.
