Small wind / Buyer questions
Structure and civil works
Why does a guyed tower need stability checks before every guy is connected?
The short answer
A guyed tower relies on a defined network of restraints. Before that network is complete, the tower can have a different effective length, stiffness and equilibrium condition. Stability must therefore be checked for the relevant incomplete configurations, rather than inferred from the completed tower’s load rating or a calm moment during erection.
Identify the restraint that actually exists
For each assessed construction state, the installation design should show connected guys, temporary supports and active lifting equipment. A cable lying nearby or loosely attached does not provide the same restraint as the final engineered connection.
The force path also depends on whether the structure is tilted, partially assembled or upright. A completed-system model cannot represent those states merely by reducing the equipment mass.
Check compatible construction actions
Gravity, line forces and wind act together on the available structure. Temporary restraints must carry the resulting actions through their connections and anchors. The absence of rotor operation does not eliminate wind loading on the tower or incomplete assembly.
Removing one restraint after another can create an unassessed condition even if the starting and final arrangements are both adequate. Structural continuity throughout the work is the issue, not only the two endpoints.
Use an engineered installation arrangement
The responsible tower and installation designers should establish the acceptable temporary configurations and prerequisites. That assessment should include ground supports and the relevant equipment interfaces, with any weather limitations coming from the actual method.
Do not derive an erection sequence from this explanation or substitute temporary ropes for designed guys. If a required component cannot be connected as intended, obtain an engineering disposition before proceeding. MARSTON turbine supply does not establish a safe incomplete tower configuration, and another manufacturer’s manual cannot approve an improvised sequence for the selected assembly.
