What evidence is needed before stored wind equipment is energized for the first time?

The short answer

Have qualified personnel review storage history and the equipment manufacturer's applicable preparation and inspection instructions before first energization. Identify unresolved exposure, missing preservation records and any required tests. A sealed package or clean exterior does not establish electrical or mechanical readiness, and this review should not be replaced by an improvised attempt to see whether the equipment switches on.

Compile the storage release evidence

Identify the exact assembly, configuration and instruction revision. Gather transport condition, storage locations, protection checks, openings and any moisture or damage findings. Reconcile accessories and temporary transport provisions with the supplier's instructions. Ask the responsible technical party to assess gaps where the history is unknown. Different electronics and assemblies can require different checks after storage; do not prescribe a universal drying, insulation-test or power-up procedure based solely on the general equipment category.

Assign competent preparation work

The release plan should state who can inspect, test and authorize the item, using equipment-specific procedures and the site's safe work arrangements. Confirm prerequisites and required instrumentation through those documents. If the supplier's instructions do not address the observed exposure, seek a written disposition before proceeding. Do not apply power, remove restraints or bypass protections to obtain diagnostic information without an authorized method. Unexpected energization and stored energy require appropriate control by the people responsible for the actual task.

Record the authorized transition

Retain the completed checks, findings, corrective actions and approving authority. Update the item from stored or quarantined to the next defined state only when its release conditions are satisfied. If a test is deferred, identify the remaining restriction explicitly. This evidence supports the transition into installation or commissioning; it does not itself constitute site acceptance or permission for unrestricted operation. Preserve the storage history with the operating asset so later service teams can interpret the equipment's condition and earlier decisions.
