Small wind / Buyer questions
Purchasing and delivery
When should a wind equipment crate be opened during storage?
The short answer
Follow the packaging and equipment supplier's inspection instructions when deciding whether to open a stored crate. Opening can reveal condition, but it can also break a moisture barrier or disturb approved supports. Agree the inspection purpose, safe opening method, required observations and restoration of preservation before a warehouse team removes protective materials.
Identify why access is needed
The reason might be a scheduled preservation check, suspected damage, inventory reconciliation or preparation for installation. Determine whether the required evidence can be obtained without opening the package. Ask which seals or barriers must remain intact and whether a supplier representative or competent inspector should attend. Do not use a universal monthly opening rule for every component. The appropriate decision depends on the actual packaging design, equipment instructions and the exposure history being assessed.
Plan the controlled inspection
Identify the package and component references, suitable workspace and approved handling arrangement. Record initial external condition and the state of any indicators before disturbance. During inspection, preserve the location of supports and protective materials in the evidence record. Staff should not dismantle assemblies or move sensitive parts beyond the authorized scope merely to obtain a better photograph. Where findings are uncertain, stop the affected activity and obtain technical guidance rather than improvise a condition acceptance test.
Restore or replace the protection
After the agreed checks, record findings and the disposition of any defects. Re-establish preservation using the approved method, including replacement materials where required. Mark the new packaging state, date and responsible person so later custodians know that the original seal was opened. If protection cannot be restored, obtain a revised storage arrangement. The inspection should leave the team with better evidence and a known preservation state, not an opened crate whose subsequent environmental protection is merely assumed.
