How should a dark line on an external wind-equipment seal be assessed?

The short answer

A dark line on an external seal can be dirt, a moulded feature, a shadow or a physical discontinuity. Its colour does not identify which. The assessment should establish whether the sealing geometry changed and whether the feature is within the seal or at its contact boundary. Do not pull or stretch the seal to make the line easier to inspect.

Compare the line with intended form

Use the component reference or an established image of the same location, where available. A regular line following the entire profile may have a different explanation from a new localized opening. Wetness and lighting can change contrast at the contact edge. Describe whether the feature is continuous, interrupted or associated with displaced material; those observations help the reviewer choose an inspection question without declaring a crack.

Look for a related functional concern

Recurring fluid or water at the same boundary, a new gap or visible loss of contact may justify a sealing assessment. Absence of such evidence does not prove every internal surface is sound. Trelleborg illustrates multiple elastomer failure appearances and contributors, but its examples cannot classify an unknown seal from a photograph. Material identity and the actual duty are needed before deciding whether aging or another mechanism is plausible.

If the dark line disappears under approved cleaning, inspect whether a physical opening remains at the same location. Removing deposited material answers the cleanliness question; it should not automatically become a positive finding about contact, elasticity or the complete sealing function.

Decide on compatible examination

The service team should establish whether approved cleaning or closer controlled inspection is needed to distinguish deposit from separation. A solvent or sharp probe can damage a seal and change the evidence. No MARSTON seal compound, compression limit or permissible crack size is established here. Any replacement or continued-service conclusion must use the actual component instructions and the function the sealing boundary is intended to perform.
