Environment and maintenance
What do hardening and surface cracks on exposed wind-equipment rubber suggest?
The short answer
Hardening and surface cracks can be consistent with environmental or thermal aging, chemical exposure or strain-related damage, depending on the elastomer. They do not identify the compound or its remaining sealing capability. The useful decision is whether the exposed component remains suitable for its particular function and which mechanism must be addressed if it is replaced.
Compare exposure and crack pattern
Sun-facing, stretched and sheltered regions may show different conditions. Trelleborg describes weathering and ozone-related examples as well as thermal degradation, which supports considering more than one cause. Do not identify ozone attack solely from a photograph or assume every dark rubber item uses the same material. A locally altered region near a chemical splash may need a different investigation from broad outdoor aging.
Assess the relevant function
An external protective boot, a weather seal and a pressure-retaining element have different consequences of deterioration. Surface appearance alone cannot establish internal condition or a safe remaining life. The qualified service specialist should define any permitted examination and determine whether the component requires replacement assessment. Do not bend, squeeze or cut an aged part to test flexibility while it remains installed or its energy state is uncertain.
If a replacement is proposed with a different compound, ask how its full service compatibility is established. Better resistance to one environmental factor does not automatically preserve performance with the actual fluid, temperature, movement and compression conditions of the installed component.
Prevent an unsupported material substitution
A replacement chosen only by dimensions or a generic claim of UV resistance can be incompatible with the actual medium, temperature or movement. Ask for the identified original specification and an approved compatible replacement. Cleaning or applying a dressing cannot be assumed to restore aged material properties. No MARSTON elastomer identity, exposure lifetime or universal replacement interval is established here; the actual component duty and condition must govern.
