What should a wind plant do if its remote curtailment command is lost?

The short answer

Specify a documented fallback for a missing, invalid or stale curtailment command. Continuing at the last value, reducing output or stopping are different strategies that require project-specific approval.

Understand the interface decision

Communication can fail without the controller recognizing a physical wire break. A retained value may remain numerically valid long after the plant’s external limit changes. The system needs a command validity definition, timeout and response that remain compatible with the turbine’s energy-control functions.

The connection operator determines the applicable grid-interface requirements. Review the approved equipment configuration against those requirements and site conditions. An example from another installation can explain a concept, but cannot authorize a new connection or settings change.

Put these inputs in the review record

Use a project-specific worksheet to capture the following information. For each entry, name the document, revision and person responsible for resolving any uncertainty.

  • The command source, authority and expected update behavior. Identify the exact configuration and the supporting document.
  • Validity, stale-data and communication-loss detection rules. Keep the design assumptions visible in the project record.
  • The approved fallback setpoint or operating state. Name the responsible reviewer and resolve any missing information.
  • Restoration behavior and conditions for accepting renewed remote authority. State how this entry will be verified during acceptance.

Define the acceptance boundary

Accept the interface through defined loss-and-restoration cases, including a frozen command stream. Do not let a generic network reconnect automatically restore unrestricted output unless that is the accepted control strategy. Protective functions must retain their required priority.

The monitoring record should identify whether curtailment is active, unavailable or using fallback. This prevents reduced output caused by a deliberate communication-loss response from being misclassified as a turbine performance fault.
