Small wind / Buyer questions
Electrical configuration
How does reactive-power operation affect a wind inverter’s available active power?
The short answer
Reactive-power operation can consume part of an inverter’s current or apparent-power capability. The remaining active-power capacity must be checked against the manufacturer’s capability envelope and applicable operating priorities.
Understand the interface decision
The familiar relationship between active, reactive and apparent power is useful for a simplified balanced operating point, but it does not replace the actual converter limits. Voltage, temperature and control requirements can change what the equipment can deliver at a particular moment.
The connection operator determines the applicable grid-interface requirements. Review the approved equipment configuration against those requirements and site conditions. An example from another installation can explain a concept, but cannot authorize a new connection or settings change.
Put these inputs in the review record
Use a project-specific worksheet to capture the following information. For each entry, name the document, revision and person responsible for resolving any uncertainty.
- The inverter’s active-reactive capability envelope and rating conditions. Identify the exact configuration and the supporting document.
- Required connection-point voltage or reactive-power behavior. Keep the design assumptions visible in the project record.
- Current limits and the priority applied when capability is constrained. Name the responsible reviewer and resolve any missing information.
- Thermal and operating-mode restrictions relevant to the project. State how this entry will be verified during acceptance.
Define the acceptance boundary
Accept the proposed operating requirement against the documented envelope. Do not promise full rated active power and an arbitrary reactive requirement simultaneously. Record any conditions that reduce available active output so the energy model can represent them where material.
The review should distinguish a steady capability limit from a transient response requirement. It should also state whether the requirement applies at converter terminals or at the grid connection, where other equipment may change the measured result.
