Small wind / Buyer questions
Electrical configuration
Why can wind-inverter power factor look poor at very low active power?
The short answer
At low active power, relatively small reactive or distortion-related components can strongly affect a reported power factor. Interpret the value with the underlying power quantities and the meter’s definition.
Understand the interface decision
A ratio displayed near zero generation can look dramatic without representing a large energy or current burden. Displacement power factor and total power factor are also different measurements. The review should identify the quantity required by the connection agreement before comparing dashboard numbers.
The connection operator determines the applicable grid-interface requirements. Review the approved equipment configuration against those requirements and site conditions. An example from another installation can explain a concept, but cannot authorize a new connection or settings change.
Put these inputs in the review record
Use a project-specific worksheet to capture the following information. For each entry, name the document, revision and person responsible for resolving any uncertainty.
- Active, reactive and apparent power at the same measurement boundary. Identify the exact configuration and the supporting document.
- The meter’s power-factor definition and measurement range. Keep the design assumptions visible in the project record.
- Converter operating state and any connected filters or auxiliaries. Name the responsible reviewer and resolve any missing information.
- The operator’s applicable requirement and its assessment conditions. State how this entry will be verified during acceptance.
Define the acceptance boundary
Do not diagnose a converter defect from a low-output power-factor screenshot alone. Compare the relevant quantities over the required operating range and use instruments suited to the waveform. Any compliance conclusion must follow the connection operator’s stated method.
Keep zero or near-zero active-power intervals distinguishable in reports. This avoids averaging a poorly defined ratio into a misleading summary or comparing it directly with rated-output performance.
