Small wind / Buyer questions
Electrical configuration
Can two rectifiers simply be paralleled on a wind DC bus?
The short answer
Not without a documented design for current sharing, source interaction and protection. Two rectifiers connected to one DC bus do not automatically divide power equally merely because their nameplate ratings match.
Understand the interface decision
Component tolerances, cable impedance and source-voltage differences can influence which branch conducts and how much heat it produces. Faults can also involve energy fed from the common bus into an affected branch. The review must therefore cover both ordinary load sharing and the means of isolating a branch without creating an unacceptable state for either wind source.
A wind electrical interface must be checked across its operating envelope, including transitions and credible faults. The following is an engineering review method; it does not establish compatibility between unnamed turbine, generator, converter or controller models.
Put these inputs in the review record
Use a project-specific worksheet to capture the following information. For each entry, name the document, revision and person responsible for resolving any uncertainty.
- The intended common-bus topology and every connected energy source. Identify the exact configuration and the supporting document.
- Rectifier supplier approval for parallel operation and sharing assumptions. Keep the design assumptions visible in the project record.
- Branch conductor impedance, thermal conditions and protection requirements. Name the responsible reviewer and resolve any missing information.
- Behavior after one branch trips, disconnects or develops an internal fault. State how this entry will be verified during acceptance.
Define the acceptance boundary
Obtain an approved branch and bus protection arrangement together with the sharing assessment. Acceptance should specify allowable branch currents and temperatures across unequal source conditions. A successful no-load connection is not evidence that rated generation or a branch failure is controlled.
Test evidence should identify each branch separately. A single total DC current can hide an overloaded rectifier beside a lightly loaded one. Preserve individual current and temperature records when the approved validation plan calls for them.
