Small wind / Buyer questions
Electrical configuration
How should a wind converter’s voltage-current operating envelope be checked?
The short answer
Plot the generator-side voltage and current requirements against the converter’s permitted operating region. Check the full combination of values, including startup and limiting states; separate maximum voltage and maximum current labels do not prove simultaneous capability.
Understand the interface decision
A converter can have power, current, voltage and temperature limits that intersect. A point within one limit may lie outside another, and the permitted region may change with cooling or operating mode. Comparing rated kW alone can miss a low-voltage, high-current condition or a high-voltage point where the available current is restricted.
A wind electrical interface must be checked across its operating envelope, including transitions and credible faults. The following is an engineering review method; it does not establish compatibility between unnamed turbine, generator, converter or controller models.
Put these inputs in the review record
Use a project-specific worksheet to capture the following information. For each entry, name the document, revision and person responsible for resolving any uncertainty.
- Generator operating points at the actual converter connection boundary. Identify the exact configuration and the supporting document.
- Continuous and transient converter limits with stated time bases. Keep the design assumptions visible in the project record.
- Temperature, cooling and environmental derating conditions that apply. Name the responsible reviewer and resolve any missing information.
- Startup, curtailment and protective states that fall outside normal optimization. State how this entry will be verified during acceptance.
Define the acceptance boundary
Use the supplier-approved envelope and retain the plotted operating cases with their assumptions. Any point beyond the allowed region needs a documented design response. Do not claim compatibility from a single rated point while the rest of the intended operating range remains unspecified.
For example, identify whether a quoted power limit is continuous at every input voltage or only within a narrower band. That question can be resolved before equipment selection, without inventing a generator curve or assuming a particular MARSTON converter specification.
