Small wind / Buyer questions
Electrical configuration
Why does a wind-system voltage rating need an insulation-coordination review?
The short answer
A nominal operating voltage does not by itself define insulation suitability. The designer must consider the insulation system, overvoltage environment, clearances, creepage and the conditions under which the equipment is installed and connected.
Understand the interface decision
The same steady operating voltage can occur in circuits with different transient exposure and earthing arrangements. Environmental conditions can also affect insulation requirements. A component that is suitable inside a defined enclosure may not be suitable as an exposed field interface. Treat the complete assembly and installation boundary as part of the electrical review.
A wind electrical interface must be checked across its operating envelope, including transitions and credible faults. The following is an engineering review method; it does not establish compatibility between unnamed turbine, generator, converter or controller models.
Put these inputs in the review record
Use a project-specific worksheet to capture the following information. For each entry, name the document, revision and person responsible for resolving any uncertainty.
- Equipment insulation ratings and the standards or test basis cited by its supplier. Identify the exact configuration and the supporting document.
- Expected operating and transient voltages at each interface. Keep the design assumptions visible in the project record.
- Installation environment, altitude and relevant contamination conditions. Name the responsible reviewer and resolve any missing information.
- Earthing, surge protection and the assembly boundaries assumed by the design. State how this entry will be verified during acceptance.
Define the acceptance boundary
Require the responsible designer to reconcile the selected equipment with the project conditions. A voltage label on one component should not be presented as certification of an entire wind electrical installation. Unspecified environmental or transient assumptions remain open technical items until resolved.
The deliverable is an insulation-coordination review tied to the selected configuration, with any external protection requirements shown on the drawing. It should be possible to see which supplier statement covers each interface and where the site designer retains responsibility.
