Small wind / Buyer questions
Electrical configuration
Why must converter selection include a wind generator’s open-circuit voltage?
The short answer
Check the highest generator voltage that the approved turbine operating and fault cases can produce, not just its loaded operating voltage. A converter must remain within its documented input limits when normal electrical loading changes.
Understand the interface decision
A generator can have different terminal voltages at the same shaft speed depending on loading and the connected conversion circuit. Removing a load therefore does not establish a harmless electrical state. The review needs the generator voltage characteristic, permitted speed envelope and the protective mechanism that constrains operation after loss of the normal energy path.
A wind electrical interface must be checked across its operating envelope, including transitions and credible faults. The following is an engineering review method; it does not establish compatibility between unnamed turbine, generator, converter or controller models.
Put these inputs in the review record
Use a project-specific worksheet to capture the following information. For each entry, name the document, revision and person responsible for resolving any uncertainty.
- Generator voltage-versus-speed data with RMS, peak and phase conventions stated. Identify the exact configuration and the supporting document.
- The unloaded or reduced-load cases permitted by the turbine design. Keep the design assumptions visible in the project record.
- Converter continuous, transient and absolute input-voltage limitations. Name the responsible reviewer and resolve any missing information.
- The protective response and timing credited for limiting generator speed or voltage. State how this entry will be verified during acceptance.
Define the acceptance boundary
Compare like quantities at the same electrical boundary. Do not compare a line-to-line RMS generator value directly with a DC absolute maximum. Any conversion or transient allowance must come from the documented circuit and the responsible equipment supplier.
A useful outcome is a voltage-envelope drawing with normal operation and limiting events shown separately. If the unloaded case is unknown, leave converter compatibility unresolved rather than assuming that the turbine rated voltage is the highest voltage possible.
