Does a wind generator’s phase sequence matter before a rectifier?

The short answer

It depends on the connected equipment. A passive rectifier may be insensitive to input phase order for its DC polarity, while an active converter, measurement function or phase-sensitive protection scheme can require a defined sequence.

Understand the interface decision

An interface that appears equivalent at the DC terminals can still differ in phase labels used by current sensors, voltage measurements or control algorithms. Reversing two generator leads without reviewing those references can invalidate logged signs or a commissioned control model. The complete receiving circuit, rather than the word “rectifier,” determines which requirements apply.

A wind electrical interface must be checked across its operating envelope, including transitions and credible faults. The following is an engineering review method; it does not establish compatibility between unnamed turbine, generator, converter or controller models.

Put these inputs in the review record

Use a project-specific worksheet to capture the following information. For each entry, name the document, revision and person responsible for resolving any uncertainty.

  • The rectifier or converter topology and its explicit input phase requirements. Identify the exact configuration and the supporting document.
  • Generator terminal labels and corresponding voltage and current sensing channels. Keep the design assumptions visible in the project record.
  • Any protection or diagnostic functions that use phase sequence or rotation. Name the responsible reviewer and resolve any missing information.
  • The manufacturer-approved verification method and resulting commissioning record. State how this entry will be verified during acceptance.

Define the acceptance boundary

Confirm the requirement with the supplier of the receiving equipment, then document the installed phase identification. Do not assume a rule from a passive diode bridge applies to an active generator converter. Any proposed lead swap should follow the controlled wiring-change process.

A useful interface table aligns generator terminal, cable core, converter terminal and measurement channel. This separates physical phase order from a screen label and provides a clear reference when technicians compare test data from different parts of the system.
