Why should a localized bulge in a wind-equipment hose be treated differently from a surface scuff?

The short answer

A localized bulge is a shape change that can raise a concern about hose construction or layer separation, while a surface scuff mainly describes abrasion at the outside. Neither observation should be accepted by appearance alone. A bulge warrants a qualified hose-specific response without touching it, squeezing it or creating pressure to see whether it grows.

Identify the changed geometry

Use safe existing evidence to distinguish a hose-body bulge from an intended fitting transition or a separate protective sleeve. Include its location relative to bends, restraints and connections. A photograph can show that the outline differs but cannot establish reinforcement condition or remaining burst strength. Do not treat a small visible diameter change as a quantified measure of internal damage.

Keep pressure hazards separate from appearance

Parker warns that pressurized fluid can escape in a hard-to-see stream and that stopping a pump may leave pressure retained. That means leak searching by hand or attempting to feel the bulge is inappropriate. Qualified personnel must establish the safe state and inspection method under the relevant instructions. A dry surface does not exclude a serious internal condition, and lack of leakage is not a pressure-integrity test.

A protective sleeve can conceal the hose body, so an apparently intact sleeve does not establish the condition beneath it. If the changed outline cannot be localized confidently, that uncertainty is a reason for the qualified assessment to define the inspection boundary explicitly.

Resolve suitability before reuse

Ask the hose supplier or responsible service specialist for the required disposition and the identity of an approved replacement where needed. Do not trim a sleeve, add a clamp or patch the area as an improvised correction. The review must consider the actual pressure, medium, temperature and movement duty. No MARSTON hose design, permissible bulge or inspection interval is established here; only applicable component evidence can support continued use.
