Small wind / Buyer questions
Electrical configuration
When should DC polarity be verified during wind-system commissioning?
The short answer
Verify polarity at the defined hold point before a DC connection is energized or enabled, and repeat the approved verification after wiring changes. The procedure must account for all sources and stored energy in the particular installation.
Understand the interface decision
Positive and negative markings on two drawings are useful only if the physical terminals, cable identifiers and installed circuit match. A battery, rectifier or shared DC bus can create different energization paths. Polarity verification belongs within a controlled commissioning sequence; it is not a substitute for proving the circuit isolated and suitable for the planned connection.
A wind electrical interface must be checked across its operating envelope, including transitions and credible faults. The following is an engineering review method; it does not establish compatibility between unnamed turbine, generator, converter or controller models.
Put these inputs in the review record
Use a project-specific worksheet to capture the following information. For each entry, name the document, revision and person responsible for resolving any uncertainty.
- Terminal designations and cable identifiers on the current as-built drawing. Identify the exact configuration and the supporting document.
- The isolated test boundary and sources that could energize it. Keep the design assumptions visible in the project record.
- The equipment manufacturer’s permitted verification method and instrument requirements. Name the responsible reviewer and resolve any missing information.
- A hold-point signature and the change conditions that require the check again. State how this entry will be verified during acceptance.
Define the acceptance boundary
Define what constitutes a satisfactory result before releasing the hold point. If labels, readings or drawings disagree, stop that release and resolve the discrepancy. Do not use a trial energization to discover whether an expensive converter has been wired with the correct polarity.
Keep the result associated with the actual connection and configuration, rather than a generic “polarity checked” box. A later terminal replacement or cable rerouting should make it clear whether the earlier evidence still covers the installed circuit.
