Why does tower anchor-bolt projection need a tolerance allowance?

The short answer

Projection must accommodate the actual vertical stack and its tolerances, not merely extend visibly above the concrete. Grout thickness, leveling arrangement, plate thickness, washers, nuts and required engagement all consume length. Too little or too much usable projection can make the intended connection unfit even if the bolt circle is correctly located.

Define the reference and the complete stack

Identify whether projection is measured from concrete, the intended grout surface or another datum. Then compare the dimensions of all components above that datum, including any lower leveling nut arrangement and installation allowance.

Distinguish overall rod projection from usable threaded length. An unthreaded portion, damaged threads or a thread runout can prevent the specified nut position even where the rod appears long enough.

Allow for vertical variation coherently

Concrete elevation, base-plate thickness and grout gap can each vary within the design’s accepted tolerances. Adding nominal dimensions without checking their combined effect can leave no practical fit margin.

A larger grout gap may consume projection and change exposed-rod behavior. Reducing it merely to gain threads can conflict with the assessed bearing or grouting detail. Both choices need review of the complete connection rather than an isolated dimension.

Resolve mismatch before lifting the tower

Compare the as-built anchor geometry with the actual plate and fastener assembly while correction options remain assessable. The responsible designer should determine whether any discrepancy is acceptable and what engineered disposition is needed.

Do not cut rods, add improvised extensions, omit washers or substitute thinner nuts to make the stack fit. This page sets no universal engagement length or projection allowance. For a MARSTON project, request the tower supplier’s applicable interface detail and coordinate it with the local foundation drawing before embedded parts are fixed.
