Why can a flexible wind tower base plate increase anchor tension?

The short answer

A flexible base plate can bend between the tower wall, anchors and compression contact. That deformation can create additional local reactions and increase anchor tension through prying. A rigid-plate force distribution may therefore be unsuitable unless its stiffness assumption is justified for the actual tower-base geometry and loading.

Identify the local bending paths

The tower introduces forces along its wall or other attachment region. Anchors and concrete bearing react at different positions. Plate thickness, anchor offset, stiffeners and contact geometry determine how the forces travel between those regions.

A larger plate is not automatically more rigid in every relevant span. If the force introduction and anchor positions move farther apart, local bending demand may also change.

Distinguish global equilibrium from local amplification

Global overturning establishes the overall tension-compression couple needed at the base. Local plate bending determines how that action is distributed and whether additional contact reactions increase forces in particular anchors.

The total number of anchors does not establish equal force sharing. Nor does a high plate yield strength guarantee low deformation; stiffness and strength are different properties, and local connection behavior can influence fatigue demand.

Review the plate and anchors as one connection

Ask whether the structural assessment models plate flexibility, contact and any stiffening consistently. Compare calculated anchor forces with the concrete anchorage and with the plate’s bending and fatigue assessment under the relevant cases.

If an analysis assumes a rigid plate, request its justification rather than simply rejecting all simplified methods. Any proposed thickening or stiffener change also needs compatibility with fabrication and the tower load path. Do not add welded stiffeners in the field from this explanation. No MARSTON base-plate thickness, prying factor or anchor-tension limit is established here.
