Can post-installed anchors replace cast-in anchors at a wind tower base?

The short answer

Post-installed anchors are not an automatic replacement for cast-in anchors. The proposed system must be assessed for the actual concrete, geometry, load history and installation conditions. Matching diameter or quoted tensile capacity is insufficient, especially where cyclic tension, edge effects, cracked concrete or sustained loading influence the connection.

Compare the complete resistance mechanism

Cast-in and post-installed arrangements can transfer forces through different mechanisms. Product qualification, embedment and substrate conditions matter, as do group spacing, pedestal boundaries and reinforcement.

The relevant resistance may be controlled by concrete or bond rather than steel. A product’s isolated-anchor table cannot establish group performance in a small pedestal or demonstrate equivalence to the original embedded cage.

Check practical installation constraints

Existing reinforcement and ducts can obstruct proposed holes. Concrete condition, drilling method, hole geometry, cleaning and, for adhesive systems, curing conditions influence whether the assessed connection can actually be achieved.

These are product- and project-specific requirements, not details that a generic FAQ can replace. A nominally stronger anchor does not compensate for an installation method outside its accepted scope or a hole that cannot be located as designed.

Treat the substitution as a structural redesign

The responsible designer should evaluate demand, all relevant failure mechanisms, fatigue or cyclic suitability where required, and the revised load transfer into the foundation. The installation specialist then confirms a feasible method consistent with that assessment.

Do not drill first and ask for acceptance afterward. If the original anchor cage is missing or defective, compare engineered remediation with a different foundation arrangement. This page authorizes no product substitution, hole location or live-site work and makes no claim that a particular post-installed system is compatible with MARSTON tower equipment.
