Can a building keep exhaust fans running while shedding their make-up air system?

The short answer

Only if the approved ventilation design permits that combination. Make-up air replaces air removed by exhaust and can also provide required tempering. Removing one part while the other continues can change building pressure, airflow paths and the delivered ventilation service. Separate electrical circuits do not establish independent process permissions.

Map air supply, exhaust and conditioning

Obtain the actual ventilation balance and controls, including outdoor air, transfer air and any conditioned make-up supply. Greenheck explains that excess exhaust over supply can create negative pressure. The magnitude and acceptable operating state require this building's design evidence; a general article cannot establish its airflow rates or a universal pressure limit.

Include the energy vectors separately

A make-up unit may have fan electricity plus heating or cooling supplied by another source. Do not treat reduced fuel heating as an equal reduction in electrical demand, or omit an electric heater because it is outside the fan meter. A proposed energy-saving state must preserve the owner's ventilation and thermal requirements rather than only reduce one motor's watts.

Identify which temperature-conditioning energy is electrical. A fan-power reduction can coexist with a changed thermal duty, and those two effects should remain distinguishable when comparing the accepted whole-building service.

Define permitted combined states for dispatch

Ask the building and process specialists which supply/exhaust combinations are acceptable and what approved response follows loss of either function. A wind request should operate within that schedule, with unsupported requests rejected. This page provides no hazardous-ventilation setting or permission to defeat an interlock. Send the accepted combined electrical profile and interface responsibilities to the wind integrator. A MARSTON turbine can be assessed as an energy source without establishing building ventilation compliance, safe occupancy or control compatibility with the existing air-handling system.
