Small wind / Buyer questions
Purchasing and delivery
How should a wind project manage desiccant and humidity indicators in storage?
The short answer
Manage desiccant and humidity indicators as parts of the supplier's approved packaging system. Identify the inspection and replacement criteria, maintain the intended barrier and record exceptions. The presence of a desiccant bag does not prove that stored equipment is protected; its suitability depends on packaging integrity, exposure and the instructions for the particular arrangement.
Understand the preservation system
Ask which package uses desiccant, where indicators can be read and what the original sealing and loading conditions were. Obtain the approved materials and the supplier's instructions for interpretation, replacement and resealing. A moisture indicator is not necessarily an instrument recording the full internal exposure history. Do not invent a universal acceptable color, humidity threshold or service interval. Device behavior and required action should come from the applicable product and packaging documentation.
Record checks without disturbing protection
Identify the package, date, observed indication and external condition. Where access requires opening a barrier, plan how protection will be restored before inspection begins. Note damaged seams, punctures, wet packaging or unplanned opening separately from the indicator reading. If an instruction cannot be followed because an indicator is missing or unreadable, request technical guidance and record the gap. Replacing desiccant does not automatically resolve any deterioration that may already have occurred during unknown moisture exposure.
Release with a documented condition assessment
Have the designated technical party assess excursions and specify any component inspection or testing required before installation. Keep replacement and resealing records with the storage history. Mark the current preservation state so another contractor does not mistake a reworked package for an untouched factory seal. The useful outcome is traceable protection and an appropriate response to uncertain exposure, not a stockroom checklist that treats the continuing presence of the original desiccant as proof of indefinite storage suitability.
