Which equipment weight should a wind turbine lift plan use?
The short answer
Use verified information for the exact assembly being lifted, including relevant attachments and lifting accessories as determined by the competent lift planner. Confirm center of gravity and approved lifting arrangements from applicable documents. A turbine's nominal product weight, shipping weight or earlier quotation may describe a different configuration and should not be substituted without review.
Identify the complete lifted assembly
State which components remain attached during the lift and which are removed. Obtain the mass and center-of-gravity information appropriate to that arrangement from the responsible supplier or other approved source. Ask how temporary fixtures and any retained packaging affect the input. Different assembly stages can produce different loads even when they involve the same turbine model. Do not estimate the required planning input from rated electrical power or from the apparent size of equipment in a photograph.
Provide inputs to a competent planner
The lift planner should evaluate the actual equipment, load path, lifting accessories and site conditions through the required planning process. HSE guidance illustrates why load identity, weight, attachment and safe equipment limits matter; local legal requirements must be checked separately for the project. This FAQ does not calculate crane capacity or specify slings, lifting points or allowable weather. If approved information is missing or inconsistent, stop the affected planning step and obtain clarification rather than select a convenient figure.
Control changes before execution
Record the source and revision of load information in the lift documentation. Reassess the plan when attachments, assembly state, lifting equipment or site assumptions change. At the pre-lift check, reconcile the actual arrangement with the released plan and retain the responsible team's records. The useful deliverable is a traceable planning input for the exact task. It is not a generic weight value that remains valid regardless of how the turbine, tower or transport fixture is configured.
