How should weather hold criteria be set for wind turbine installation?
The short answer
Set installation weather criteria through the responsible task planners using equipment instructions, lifting arrangements and site risks. Identify who monitors conditions, stops work and authorizes resumption. Do not copy a turbine operating wind-speed limit into an installation plan; a component that can operate in wind may still require different conditions while being lifted or assembled.
Separate operating and task limits
Ask the supplier and contractors for the applicable restrictions for each planned activity, including handling, lifting, assembly and inspection where relevant. Confirm how measurements represent conditions at the task location. Weather effects can involve wind, visibility, lightning, precipitation or ground conditions, depending on the operation. The actual criteria must come from competent assessment and approved instructions. This page intentionally provides no universal threshold, because a single number cannot safely represent every tower, lifting method and work arrangement.
Define stop and resume authority
Assign the person responsible for monitoring and communicating changes. Establish how work is left in a safe interim state when conditions deteriorate and which checks are needed before restarting. Clarify how a contractor reports a condition outside the plan's assumptions. A commercial preference to complete the lift that day should not replace the competent stop decision. Ensure the relevant teams understand the same criteria rather than relying on different weather applications or informal estimates.
Retain the condition record
Record observed conditions at the required stages and link interruptions to the work activity and current equipment state. If the method changes after a weather delay, obtain the necessary review before resuming. Preserve any inspections required after exposure or an interrupted operation. The objective is a controlled response to actual conditions with a known safe state. It does not establish product storm performance or imply that a safely completed installation proves the equipment is suitable for every environmental condition at the site.
