How should tower segments be identified before assembly?

The short answer

Reconcile tower segment identifiers, revisions, matching instructions and orientation before assembly. Use the tower supplier's approved documents for the actual set. Similar dimensions or nominal tower height do not establish that segments from different sets can be mixed, and a transport label alone may not identify the complete structural configuration required for installation.

Create an assembly identity check

List the delivered segments, flange or connection references, supplied fasteners and applicable assembly drawings. Ask how the supplier identifies mating order and orientation where those details matter. Preserve original markings and link any temporary site labels to them. If one identifier is unreadable, obtain a traceable replacement identification from the responsible supplier rather than assign an assumed identity based on where the segment was stacked. The evidence should connect each physical piece to the accepted tower configuration.

Confirm compatibility before handling

The erection team should verify the planned sequence and connection requirements before lifting begins. Quarantine unexpected or mismatched parts and obtain technical disposition. Do not use force, unapproved machining or field drilling to make components fit. A replacement segment may require review even if its external dimensions appear similar. The actual design and manufacturing records determine whether it is suitable; this FAQ does not authorize interchangeability between towers, revisions or turbine configurations.

Preserve the installed set record

Record which segments and relevant fastener batches or references were installed at the asset, together with approved deviations. Update as-built and maintenance documents if the configuration changed. Retain condition observations from unpacking and erection. This record helps later technicians identify instructions and discuss replacements accurately. It is distinct from a generic tower model description: the operator needs to know the actual installed assembly, not only the name of the product family originally shown in the quotation.
