What should happen if a wind installation appears to require a field modification?

The short answer

Stop the affected installation activity and obtain an approved engineering disposition before modifying supplied equipment. Record the actual fit or access problem, applicable documents and proposed change. A local adjustment that appears minor can affect structural integrity, interfaces, preservation or serviceability, so the crew should not infer authorization from schedule pressure or apparent similarity to another project.

Describe the actual obstruction

Identify the asset, component, drawing revision and installation step. Capture measurements and photographs sufficient for the responsible engineer to understand the problem without guessing. Distinguish incorrect supplied parts, site construction differences, document errors and an unexpected method constraint where the evidence allows. Do not begin cutting, drilling, welding, heating or reshaping a component merely to investigate whether it can fit. Preserve its original condition while the designated parties assess the issue and the safe interim state.

Obtain a complete disposition

The responsible technical authority should assess the proposed correction, affected interfaces, required inspections and any consequential documents or tests. Identify who authorizes the work and who is competent to execute it. Where the change affects contractual scope or approvals, route those decisions through the agreed process as well. A supplier's informal suggestion may need conversion into a controlled instruction before the contractor can use it. This FAQ does not approve a specific modification or determine its legal consequences.

Verify and record the final state

Execute only the authorized scope using its applicable procedure, then retain the required inspection and release evidence. Update the as-built information, component history and service instructions where the change requires it. Close the installation discrepancy by linking the original problem to the approved outcome. The result should explain what was changed and why it was accepted. It should not leave a hidden field alteration that later technicians mistake for the manufacturer's original configuration or use as a precedent for another turbine.
