How should installation information pass between wind contractor shifts?

The short answer

Transfer the actual work status, safe condition, active permits or holds, incomplete connections and next authorized activities between shifts using the site's controlled handover process. A statement that the day's work is finished is inadequate when an assembly remains partially complete. The incoming supervisor needs enough evidence to understand what may safely proceed and what remains restricted.

Describe the physical and document status

Identify the asset, current installation stage and instructions in use. Record components temporarily supported, work left incomplete and any conditions that differ from the normal assembled state. Note inspections completed and those still required before the next step. Relevant energy-isolation and permit information must follow the applicable competent site procedure; this FAQ does not prescribe their transfer method. Keep the physical status consistent with the written record so the next crew does not infer completion from appearance.

Carry forward decisions and holds

List unresolved discrepancies, approved temporary arrangements, pending supplier responses and the person responsible for each next decision. Identify work that must not be covered, loaded or energized before release. Transfer tool, material and component availability where it affects the planned sequence. The incoming team should acknowledge the handover and ask for clarification when the stated condition cannot be reconciled with the site. Schedule pressure should not turn an uncertain status into an assumed authorization to continue.

Preserve continuity of execution evidence

Record the outgoing and incoming responsible people, time and relevant observations. Retain references to installation records instead of copying disconnected summaries that can become inconsistent. If the crew discovers a different condition, stop the affected task and resolve the discrepancy through the site process. A useful shift handover maintains a shared understanding of the asset and its restrictions. It does not replace task competence, safe work planning or the separate acceptance records required for completed installation activities.
