Why should a wind buyer ask about transshipment and intermediate handling?

The short answer

Ask about transshipment when it changes the number of handling steps, transport units, storage periods or packaging assumptions. Additional transfers are not proof that damage will occur, but they create interfaces the packing and logistics plan should address. Review the proposed journey using final package information rather than only the origin and destination names.

Map the actual transport chain

Request the expected transport modes, transfer locations, repacking arrangements and responsibility at each handover. Identify whether cargo remains inside one sealed transport unit or is unloaded and handled separately. Record any package orientation or handling restrictions the intermediate operator needs. A quoted route can change after booking, so ask which changes require notification. The useful question is how the actual cargo will be protected and identified across the journey, not simply whether the service is described as direct.

Review protection at transfer points

Ask the responsible packer whether the approved packaging and securing arrangement covers the proposed movements. Check exposure to weather, temporary storage and handling equipment limitations where relevant. If packages will be opened, identify who restores preservation and records condition. Do not assume that the first packer's responsibility extends to every later repacking operation. Each material change should have an accountable party and evidence appropriate to the activity rather than an undefined expectation that the freight forwarder will manage everything.

Reconcile changes and receipt evidence

Retain route updates, transfer records and any observed exceptions with the shipment documents. At receipt, compare the actual package condition and identifiers with dispatch evidence. Where a handling event is suspected, use the records to support a factual technical assessment without assigning cause prematurely. This review helps a buyer choose and prepare for the proposed logistics chain. It does not establish that a route with fewer transfers is always preferable or that transshipment invalidates otherwise suitable transport arrangements.
