Small wind / Buyer questions
Environment and maintenance
Can a dented wind-turbine cover be accepted because it does not touch anything while stopped?
The short answer
Static noncontact is not enough to accept a dented cover. The cover and nearby parts can move, deflect or change temperature during operation, and hidden mounts may also be damaged. The assessment should establish the relevant clearance envelope and barrier function for the actual assembly before a dent is treated as cosmetic.
Identify the deformation boundary
Compare the changed profile with the intended cover shape, attachments and nearby components. A small external dent can have a different implication depending on where its inward displacement lies. A photograph may not show the closest internal point or the condition of mounting features. Do not push the panel back by hand or rotate equipment to see whether it touches; those actions do not provide a controlled clearance assessment.
Consider operating movement and protection
The engineer needs the documented relative movement and clearances, not an assumed vibration allowance. The dent can also alter drainage, sealing or fastener loading even if no moving part is nearby. A stopped-state view answers only one geometry question. Conversely, a dent does not automatically require whole-machine replacement; the scope depends on the affected function and whether the condition can be adequately assessed.
A cover can also protect against environmental entry without carrying a structural load. Its deformation may therefore matter through sealing or drainage even when internal mechanical clearance is ample. The review should identify which function, rather than presumed cosmetic significance, controls the disposition.
Request a defined disposition
Ask whether repair, replacement or another qualified examination is needed and how the required fit and protection will be verified afterward. Cosmetic restoration should not conceal cracked mounts or changed openings. No MARSTON minimum clearance, cover material or permitted dent depth is established here. The correct decision uses the actual assembly evidence and any documented operating restrictions while the condition remains unresolved.
