Small wind / Buyer questions
Electrical configuration
Does a Modbus port guarantee wind-controller compatibility?
The short answer
No. Modbus provides a communication framework, while a device's register map defines how its application data is represented. Two devices may both support Modbus yet disagree on addresses, data types, scaling, available commands or the meaning of a status value. Successful communication is one part of interoperability; it does not prove that the receiving system can safely supervise or control the wind equipment.
A plausible number can still be wrong
Hypothetical example: a register returns the integer 250. In one map that might represent 25.0 V using a scale factor of 0.1; in another it might represent 250 V. If the receiving system applies the wrong scale, the connection may look healthy while the displayed value is wrong.
Other fields may use signed integers, multiple registers or a defined byte/word order. Interpretations must come from the relevant device documentation, not from guessing at plausible readings.
Build a small interface agreement
| Item | What to record |
|---|---|
| Transport and addressing | Supported variant and documented address convention |
| Data interpretation | Type, order, units, scale and invalid-value behavior |
| Commands | Permission, meaning, acknowledgement and actual effect |
| Loss of communication | Timeout indication and equipment fallback state |
Reading operating data and issuing control commands require different evidence.
Verify useful behavior rather than an interface label
Agree on representative measurements and states that the project needs. Compare the received values with a trustworthy reference and verify status transitions under approved test procedures. Record the register-map and firmware revisions used.
A MARSTON quotation should identify any communication functions actually included. An existing plant's preferred protocol, or a historical cabinet document, does not establish current remote-control or monitoring features as standard.
Keep revisions attached to the interface
A familiar model family may use a different register map after hardware or firmware changes. Retain the applicable revision with the integration records and check replacement equipment against it. This avoids treating an old successful communications test as permanent proof that every later controller from the same supplier will behave identically.
