Can wind power feed a diesel generator’s AC bus?

The short answer

It can be engineered in a coordinated hybrid system, but matching AC voltage and frequency is not enough. The design must address which equipment establishes the bus reference, how generation follows changing load and what happens when wind output exceeds demand. The engine-generator's permitted loading and reverse-power behavior are equipment-specific. An ordinary generator supply should not be assumed to accept power flowing back into it.

Test the low-load case on paper

Illustrative loss-free snapshot: wind contributes 6 kW while site loads use 4 kW. With no storage or other sink, the bus has a 2 kW surplus even before considering a diesel generator that may also be producing. That balance cannot be solved merely by having both sources synchronize.

The operating concept might reduce wind, change the generating set's role or use another documented energy sink. Its actual methods and limits must belong to the supplied system.

Assign the responsibilities

Responsibility Project question
Voltage/frequency reference Which source provides it in each operating mode?
Power allocation How are loads and generation coordinated?
Generator protection What reverse-power limits and actions are specified?
Mode changes What happens when a source starts, stops or trips?

Compare fuel savings using the permitted operating plan

A wind-energy total does not directly equal displaced generator fuel. Generator duty, low-load operation, starts, charging losses and restrictions can affect the outcome. Use the actual operating sequence and suitable generator information when evaluating savings.

For a MARSTON wind subsystem enquiry, identify the retained generating set and any third-party battery/inverter. The proposal must define the interface; the turbine rating does not establish diesel-bus compatibility.

Avoid assuming the engine is the balancing sink

A running diesel engine is not an unlimited absorber of surplus renewable energy. Its permitted loading and reverse-power protection come from the actual generator documentation and system design. If the proposed operating plan depends on the engine accepting energy, that claim needs explicit support rather than being hidden inside a generic hybrid-system description.
