Small wind / Buyer questions
Site and operations
How can I plan wind turbine maintenance without remote monitoring?
The short answer
Base the plan on the equipment and observations actually available. Identify who can make permitted local checks, how observations are recorded, how faults are reported and when qualified service personnel attend. Without a confirmed remote-monitoring function, do not assume that a service provider can see alarms, diagnose conditions or restart equipment from elsewhere. Monitoring and the scheduled maintenance requirements are separate parts of the service arrangement.
Define what the operator can genuinely observe
An installation may have a local display, meter or status indication, but the available information must be confirmed for the supplied package. List the signals and records the operator can access under the operating instructions. Observations should not require improvised climbing, enclosure access or electrical testing.
A simple event record can identify the asset, date, time, observed status and relevant operating conditions. Record an unknown condition as unknown. A lack of alarm data is not proof that a stopped turbine has no equipment fault.
Make the reporting chain practical
| Function | Question to settle |
|---|---|
| Local observation | Who is present and what may they observe? |
| Record keeping | Where are dated observations and available readings stored? |
| Escalation | Who receives a fault report and assigns the next action? |
| Specialist attendance | What access and service arrangements apply? |
A named reporting responsibility is more useful than a vague assumption that somebody will notice low output.
Evaluate a monitoring upgrade as a separate scope
If earlier detection would materially change outage consequences, discuss a defined monitoring requirement. Specify which data, communications and access functions are needed and whether the selected equipment supports them. Adding an internet connection alone does not establish useful turbine telemetry or approved remote control.
MARSTON monitoring functions depend on the actual supplied control package. Keep an unconfirmed feature out of the maintenance plan until it is documented. Meanwhile, the local observation and attendance arrangement should remain workable on its own terms.
