Small wind / Buyer questions
Site and operations
Can an existing tower support a different wind turbine with the same kW rating?
The short answer
The same kW rating is not proof that the existing tower is suitable. A replacement turbine can have different rotor dimensions, mass distribution, loading, operating behaviour and connection geometry. The responsible designers need to assess the complete retained support arrangement, including its condition and foundation, for the defined replacement. Treat reuse as a documented engineering decision rather than a standard benefit of matching rated power.
Separate physical fit from structural suitability
A flange or adapter that allows the turbine to be connected addresses only part of the question. It does not independently establish the adequacy of the tower, connections, foundation or dynamic behaviour. Modifying an interface can also change the configuration being assessed.
Consider two hypothetical turbines carrying the same nominal rating but different rotor sizes. Their names alone do not establish equal thrust or other loading. Even a similar mass does not prove that all relevant load cases are equivalent.
Review what is retained and what changes
| Part of the proposal | Evidence needed for the review |
|---|---|
| Replacement turbine | Model identity, loads and installation interfaces. |
| Retained tower | Design records, configuration and current condition. |
| Foundation and anchors | Applicable records and assessment of suitability. |
| Controls and operating cases | The proposed system behaviour relevant to the structure. |
The table identifies assessment boundaries, not a complete design specification or acceptance test.
Price uncertainty before choosing reuse
Reusing a tower may save work, but investigation, design, repairs or interface changes can alter the comparison with a new support arrangement. Keep those items visible rather than assuming a retained tower has zero project cost.
For a MARSTON retrofit enquiry, identify the exact retained equipment and share available drawings and condition records. Request the proposed turbine information needed by the responsible local designers. The final record should state the assessed combination and any conditions; it should not merely say that another turbine of the same kW was previously installed.
