Why should diesel fixed costs remain when wind only reduces fuel use?

The short answer

If a diesel generator remains necessary, many ownership and readiness costs can remain even when wind reduces fuel use. A financial model should identify which costs are avoidable and which are retained. Assigning the generator's full average cost to every displaced kWh can overstate the benefit of a wind addition.

Define the retained diesel role

Record whether the generator still supplies peak demand, critical service, grid-forming support or prolonged low-wind periods. Its continuing function affects the costs and operating constraints that remain. Do not assume wind nameplate capacity permits diesel capacity to be removed.

Use the actual integrated design and service requirements to establish the role. A high annual wind total is not evidence that the backup generator can be sold or its readiness arrangements abandoned.

Separate cost categories

Distinguish fuel, running-hour-related maintenance, fixed maintenance, ownership, insurance and other documented costs. Some may vary with operation; others may change only if equipment or contracts are actually removed. Keep the source and timing of each assumption visible.

Fuel displacement also depends on the generator's operating-load behaviour and dispatch. Reducing electrical output while the engine remains running does not necessarily save the same fuel per kWh as eliminating a complete operating period.

Compare the true incremental project

Model the wind addition against the diesel arrangement that would otherwise provide the same service. Include integration cost, wind operating cost and any evidenced changes to generator use. Test uncertainty in fuel delivery cost and dispatch without inventing future prices.

The handover should show retained capacity costs and avoided operating costs separately. This helps the buyer understand wind as a possible fuel-displacement investment while avoiding an unsupported claim that every cost of remote diesel service disappears when annual wind generation is added.
