Small wind / Buyer questions
Energy and economics
Can a sawmill shift batch processing to use more wind generation?
The short answer
A sawmill may be able to shift selected batches toward periods of wind generation, but the useful flexibility depends on the complete production process. Staff, material flow, downstream operations and safety-related systems can constrain timing. Assess a realistic operating schedule rather than treating the sum of motor ratings as a freely movable load.
Map a complete production batch
Record the equipment used together, the operating sequence, idle consumption and output produced. Identify material buffers before and after the batch. A stockpile can create scheduling room, but it does not remove labor, maintenance or delivery constraints.
Separate flexible production from services that must remain available whenever machinery operates. Do not propose shedding a safety-related auxiliary merely to match a temporary fall in generation.
Compare feasible schedules with wind chronology
Use measured interval demand or a justified process profile and a supported wind-generation series. Evaluate only schedules the operator can actually use. Include setup, restart and incomplete-batch consequences where they affect electricity or production.
Keep motor starting and power-quality requirements separate from annual-energy matching. A schedule with good kWh overlap does not prove that the proposed electrical system can start or operate the equipment correctly.
Judge the incremental business result
Compare the additional useful wind energy with changes in labor, throughput, work-in-progress and other relevant costs. Moving production only to consume surplus can be unattractive if the operating consequences exceed the electricity benefit.
The enquiry should include the batch profile, allowable timing window and actual supply arrangement. This gives the integrator a defined assessment task without promising that wind can directly follow the sawmill or that an unverified control configuration can safely coordinate all process loads.
