Small wind / Buyer questions
Application integration
Can an EV charger switch between one and three phases to follow wind output?
The short answer
Some approved EVSE and vehicle combinations support phase changes, but this must be confirmed for the exact arrangement. Phase switching can change the available charging range and per-phase demand. It can also involve a pause or a session restriction. A three-phase supply label alone does not authorize a controller or installer to change phases during charging.
Check the complete supported combination
Request the EVSE's phase-transition description, supported vehicle behavior and installation conditions. Identify whether a transition is automatic, which operating states permit it and whether returning to three phases is available within the same session. Zaptec's product documentation gives specific examples; another model can behave differently even within the same supplier's range.
Calculate the relevant phase limits
For an illustrative unity-power-factor comparison at the same phase-to-neutral voltage and current, three identical active phases deliver three times the power of one such phase. That relationship does not prove either operating point is permitted. Check each phase's available capacity and the accepted imbalance at the site. A total three-phase surplus can conceal insufficient headroom on the phase actually used.
Model the period around a phase transition explicitly. Treating the whole interval as charging at the final phase configuration can overstate transfer if a supported pause consumes a meaningful part of that interval.
Include transition performance in acceptance
Ask the charging integrator to show successful supported transitions, interruption duration and resumed transfer under agreed conditions. Record any vehicles that remain in the lower-phase state or need another session. Model useful wind using those actual states instead of assuming instant, lossless switching on every fluctuation. Send the phase-capability evidence and intended connection to the wind supplier. Protection, source capability and charging control remain configuration-specific responsibilities; this page gives no switching method, settings or claim that a MARSTON wind package performs EV phase management.
