Small wind / Buyer questions
Application integration
Why can electricity drawn during an EV charging session exceed the energy added to its battery?
The short answer
A connected vehicle can use electricity for battery heating or cooling and other onboard services as well as storing energy. Conversion losses also exist between the station meter and stored battery energy. A difference between these quantities therefore does not by itself identify a charger fault, but it should be explained using the actual vehicle state and measurement boundaries.
Identify what each displayed quantity means
Record whether the station shows AC input, DC output or session energy at another specified boundary. Establish whether the vehicle reports estimated stored energy, state-of-charge change or another calculated quantity. A percentage change multiplied by an assumed battery capacity is not automatically a calibrated energy measurement, especially if usable capacity or temperature conditions are unknown.
Separate conditioning from charge accumulation
Tesla's manual illustrates that thermal conditioning can occur before or during charging and that connected equipment can support other vehicle functions. Use the applicable vehicle documents and state records rather than applying those details to every fleet. Include ambient and arrival conditions when comparing sessions. A cold vehicle arriving after a long park can have a different input trajectory from one arriving warm.
Compare sessions at consistent arrival and departure conditions where possible. A different initial temperature or a cabin-use pattern can explain part of an energy difference without demonstrating a change in charger conversion performance.
Use the correct service basis for wind
For electrical supply design, retain the complete input demand. For a transport-energy comparison, report stored-energy estimates and identified conditioning separately, with their uncertainty. Do not simply label the whole difference as wasted wind or promise that all charger-meter energy becomes driving energy. Provide representative arrival conditions, connected periods and the actual metering definitions in the RFQ. The charging and vehicle teams should resolve unexplained differences before attributing them to the wind converter. General vehicle documentation establishes no MARSTON-to-vehicle charging compatibility or storage product.
