Can compressed-air storage help a workshop use variable wind generation?

The short answer

A compressed-air receiver can buffer some short-term air demand, but it is not automatically a substitute for an electrical battery. Its useful flexibility depends on pressure limits, air demand, compressor controls and the work performed. Assess the complete air service before assigning a wind-following schedule.

Define the air service and usable buffer

Record required pressure, flow, quality and the permitted operating range of the receiver and system. Identify critical and deferrable uses with the operator. Receiver volume alone does not describe how long the useful service can continue.

Follow applicable equipment and pressure-system requirements through qualified review. Do not change pressure limits or control settings to increase apparent storage without the relevant engineering approval.

Compare compressor operation with wind chronology

Use measured compressor electrical demand and air-service evidence where available. A compressor may consume power while unloaded or waiting, and its duty is not simply the sum of pneumatic tool ratings. Address avoidable losses before treating them as useful wind demand.

Model only a feasible charging and consumption schedule. A receiver may smooth short fluctuations without providing hours of flexible operation, and more storage does not establish that the electrical system can follow turbine output safely.

Value the actual operational benefit

Compare additional useful wind consumption with compressor efficiency, control changes, maintenance and receiver cost. Keep air buffering separate from any proposed conversion back to electricity, which would be a different system requiring its own evidence.

The enquiry should include air-duty requirements, measured power, allowed scheduling and actual supply architecture. This supports a practical wind assessment without claiming a verified storage duration, direct-drive compatibility or an energy-saving benefit that the workshop has not measured or modelled on a complete service basis.
