How should a seasonal hotel assess wind generation for domestic hot water?

The short answer

A seasonal hotel's hot-water demand can differ sharply from its annual wind resource. Storage may shift some heating time, but it cannot create useful demand when rooms are empty or override water-service requirements. Assess actual occupancy, hot-water duty and an approved operating arrangement before assigning value to wind energy.

Build a service-based demand profile

Record occupancy patterns, hot-water use, existing heating equipment and losses. Distinguish measured operation from a proposed expansion. Peak service requirements can remain important even when annual demand is modest.

Use qualified building and water-system advice to define permissible storage temperatures, hygiene requirements and control arrangements. Do not choose operating limits merely to maximize wind consumption or assume the full nominal tank volume is flexible thermal capacity.

Compare useful charging windows with wind

Model when heat can be added and later used within the approved service limits. Include storage losses, existing heating contributions and seasonal closure. Energy arriving outside useful windows may have a different value from electricity that displaces a documented purchase.

Electrical integration remains a separate review. A hot-water tank does not prove that a turbine can connect directly to the heater or that a particular controller can manage surplus generation.

Compare complete alternatives

Assess wind against realistic efficiency work, heating options and other power sources on the same hot-water service. Include equipment, maintenance and any retained supply needed during low-wind periods. Do not count unnecessary heating as a useful energy benefit.

The handover should identify occupancy assumptions, approved thermal limits and resource evidence. This gives the buyer a grounded project comparison without inventing product performance, hygiene settings, a guaranteed storage duration or savings that depend on a hotel operating pattern it does not actually have.
