Why might a yaw-drive mounting use an eccentric pinion adjustment?
The short answer
An eccentric mounting can change pinion centre distance as the drive is positioned, allowing the specified gear-mesh geometry to be established. Its presence does not authorize arbitrary adjustment. In a wind-yaw assembly, use the exact drive and ring-gear instructions to identify its intended function and setting.
Relate eccentricity to centre distance
The pinion axis is offset from the mounting reference, so changing the mounting orientation moves that axis relative to the ring. This can change backlash and contact geometry without changing the gear teeth themselves. The effect depends on the eccentric design and ring position. A drawing with elongated holes or an offset boss should not be interpreted from appearance alone; it may serve another locating purpose.
Keep clearance and contact aligned
Reducing centre distance to remove perceived play can create insufficient clearance at the tightest ring position or change tooth contact unfavorably. Increasing it can also alter engagement. Rothe Erde’s gearing guidance treats adequate flank clearance as a required mesh condition. No adjustment distance, tooth clearance or field sequence can be borrowed from that general guidance for an unidentified yaw drive.
Request the setting references
Ask the supplier to identify the eccentric reference marks, measurement location, ring position and acceptance criterion in the approved assembly instruction. Confirm how the mounting is retained after the intended setup. MARSTON pinion mounting and gearbox design are unconfirmed. If actual geometry differs from the document, refer the discrepancy to the designer rather than rotate the drive until motion feels satisfactory. The useful decision is whether the installed adjustment mechanism can produce and retain the manufacturer-defined mesh across the required rotation. The eccentric range should be assessed against actual manufacturing variation of the mating parts. An adjustment feature can exist yet lack sufficient range to recover an out-of-tolerance ring or incorrectly located mounting interface.
