Can one backlash measurement establish clearance around a complete yaw ring?
The short answer
No. Ring-gear radial runout or mounting deformation can make mesh clearance vary around the circumference. One convenient backlash reading cannot establish the minimum clearance everywhere. A wind-yaw gear review needs the manufacturer-defined positions and method for the actual ring and pinion assembly.
Distinguish a local reading from an envelope
The pinion samples different parts of the ring as relative angle changes. An eccentric ring can move closer to the pinion at one position and farther away elsewhere. Tooth and support variations can add other local effects. A reading made at the most open location can therefore conceal a tighter region, even when the reported value appears generous.
Identify the relevant high-point reference
Some gear instructions use marked regions or defined measurement positions to establish mesh at a controlling location. The meaning of those marks must come from the selected component. Rothe Erde technical instructions address gearing position and clearance, but their numerical guidance cannot be universalized. The measured movement also needs a specified load/reversal condition so elastic compliance is not confused with free flank clearance.
Request circumferential evidence
Ask for the ring’s geometric reference, required sampling positions and the acceptance method linking local readings to the full movement range. Include the installed support state, since a ring measured loose can differ after assembly. No MARSTON backlash value or adjustment procedure is supplied here. Do not tighten mesh from a single reading or infer that smooth movement at one heading proves complete clearance. The acceptance decision is whether the documented evidence covers the controlling position around the actual ring. Retain the location of each reading relative to the ring’s reference mark. A list of values without angular positions cannot show whether repeat assessments cover the same controlling region or simply sample different teeth.
