Does an accelerated UV test establish the outdoor life of a wind blade coating?
The short answer
An accelerated UV test does not establish outdoor coating life merely by accumulating exposure hours. Its spectrum, temperature, moisture conditions and evaluated failure mode must be related to the intended service environment. The practical decision is whether the evidence supports a specific durability claim, rather than whether the report shows a long test duration or a generic pass.
Identify the exposure variables
UV source and dose, specimen temperature and wet-dry conditioning describe different parts of the test. A coating on a flat laboratory substrate may not reproduce every condition of a blade surface. NIST weathering research explicitly examines spectral irradiance, temperature and moisture in service-life work. That supports asking for a relevant relationship, but does not supply an acceleration factor for a MARSTON coating.
Match the outcome to the claim
Colour change, chalking, cracking and retained mechanical or adhesion properties are distinct outcomes. A result addressing one should not be silently extended to the others. Ask what was measured and which criterion defined the reported result. A visually unchanged specimen does not demonstrate every structural or protective property, while a colour change does not necessarily establish failure of the underlying blade construction.
If a claim concerns colour retention, a relevant colour result can be useful without proving structural durability. If the claim concerns protection against cracking, a colour-only result leaves that question open. The evidence request should follow the exact promise made in the quotation.
Require justified field interpretation
A claim of outdoor years needs evidence connecting laboratory exposure, degradation mechanism and the relevant field conditions. Increasing the severity does not automatically preserve the same mechanism. If that relationship is unavailable, present the report as bounded comparative evidence rather than a lifespan guarantee. No MARSTON UV rating, resin system or coating lifetime is established here; the component identity and actual claim must remain explicit in the review.
