Small wind / Buyer questions
Environment and maintenance
What must be matched before ultrasonic inspection can assess a wind-blade concern?
The short answer
Ultrasonic inspection must match the actual blade construction, geometry and defect question before its result can support a condition decision. A generic instrument capability does not prove that a particular setup can find the relevant flaw. Ask the specialist to define the intended target, reference evidence and inspection coverage for the specific region being assessed.
Match method to material and shape
Laminate arrangement, thickness changes, interfaces and access affect the acoustic path. A setup appropriate to one region or specimen may not represent another. ASNT describes geometry, material behaviour and discontinuity orientation as inspection considerations. This supports method selection by a qualified specialist; it does not establish that every wind-blade concern is detectable with a standard thickness gauge or one probe frequency.
Ask how sensitivity is established
The reviewer should understand what reference or demonstrated capability supports detection of the relevant defect in representative construction. A visible trace or colour image is not self-interpreting. Surface condition, coupling and coverage can affect the result, while some regions may remain unexamined. Any required preparation must be compatible with the blade and authorized; this page supplies no probe setup, surface-removal or coupling procedure.
If a proposed procedure was demonstrated only on a flat laminate sample, ask how that evidence represents the curved or multilayer blade region in question. A successful demonstration can support capability without automatically covering a different geometry, interface or target defect.
Connect indications to the engineering decision
A detected indication needs evaluation against applicable blade criteria, and no indication means only what the valid method and coverage can establish. Ask whether the result bounds the concern sufficiently for repair planning or whether complementary examination is needed. No MARSTON laminate, ultrasonic acceptance threshold or whole-blade certification is claimed. The qualified inspection evidence must remain separate from the engineer or supplier decision about component fitness and release.
