Can one thickness reading establish how much corrosion a wind component has lost?
The short answer
One thickness reading describes a limited measurement region; it cannot establish the maximum corrosion loss across an entire component. Local pits, variable original geometry and measurement limitations can change the interpretation. The decision should be based on a coverage plan and suitable reference information that can identify the controlling remaining material, rather than the most convenient displayed number.
Establish the comparison geometry
The original part may have thickness variation, a machined feature or a curved surface. A nominal drawing value is not automatically the original thickness at the exact measured point. Distinguish remaining thickness from calculated loss, and identify what reference supports that calculation. A reading on sound material beside a pit cannot be presented as the minimum remaining thickness within the damaged region.
Check that the measurement is valid
Evident describes limitations involving pitting, roughness, instrument range and the ultrasonic return. A missing or unstable reading is not a zero-loss finding. The qualified inspector should select the equipment, calibration and spatial coverage appropriate to the actual geometry. Surface preparation can alter protection and evidence, so it must follow an authorized assessment method rather than ad hoc grinding to obtain a stable number.
A minimum reading reported without its location cannot show whether the suspected pit was actually sampled. The survey should connect the controlling result with the damaged region and identify any unreadable locations, so missing coverage is not hidden by a table of valid numbers elsewhere.
Request an engineering-use result
Ask whether the survey adequately bounds local minima and whether its uncertainty is small enough for the intended condition decision. The engineer then evaluates the result against the applicable component requirements. Averaging several sound regions can hide a controlling local pit. No MARSTON original wall thickness, corrosion allowance or remaining-section limit is established here; the measurement must be tied to the actual part and evaluated function.
