Small wind / Buyer questions
Structure and civil works
Why does wind tower plumbness matter beyond appearance?
The short answer
Initial lean creates an offset between vertical load and the intended support geometry. That can introduce additional bending and affect alignment, clearance and guy-force distribution. Plumbness therefore belongs to structural assessment, not only visual workmanship. The applicable tolerance must come from the actual tower design and installation requirements.
Establish a stable geometric reference
Distinguish foundation tilt, tower-segment misalignment and bending under the measurement conditions. A tower observed during wind-induced motion may not represent its unloaded reference shape. Survey locations and environmental conditions should be suitable for the question being assessed.
Use a defined vertical reference and sufficient points to identify the shape. One measurement at the top cannot reliably separate a uniformly tilted base from local curvature or segment offsets.
Follow the effect of initial eccentricity
Vertical force acting through an offset creates a moment. As wind deflects the tower further, second-order effects can increase that contribution. For a guyed structure, initial geometry can also redistribute cable tension and member compression.
These effects depend on mass distribution, stiffness and restraint. The same measured lean angle does not imply the same consequence for every tower type or height.
Review the cause before selecting correction
Compare the measured geometry with the accepted tower detail and foundation baseline. If the deviation is established, the responsible designer should assess its significance and identify whether the cause lies in support movement, assembly geometry or another condition.
Do not correct lean by arbitrary anchor tightening, shimming or guy adjustment. Such changes can alter the very load path being assessed. For a MARSTON installation, confirm the actual tower supplier’s plumbness requirements and the local foundation condition; this FAQ supplies no universal angle, offset or return-to-service criterion.
