Why can a wind tower wall buckle before the steel reaches its yield strength?

The short answer

Thin steel walls can lose local stability under compression before the material reaches its yield strength. Tower diameter, thickness, unsupported shell geometry and imperfections influence that response. A material strength certificate therefore cannot establish local tower-wall resistance, and substituting higher-strength steel does not automatically resolve a shell-buckling limitation.

Distinguish a material limit from instability

Yielding concerns the steel’s stress-strain response. Buckling concerns a change in structural shape and load-carrying behavior. A wall can develop a local buckle while much of its material remains below yield.

Wind bending creates compression on part of the tower circumference. That compressed region must be checked together with axial force and other relevant actions, using a method appropriate to the tower section and loading.

Check the geometry actually being assessed

Diameter-to-thickness ratio, taper, welds, openings and local shape deviations can affect shell behavior. A perfectly circular numerical model may overpredict resistance if the adopted assessment does not account appropriately for imperfections.

NASA’s cylinder-buckling guidance explains the underlying sensitivity of thin shells. Its aerospace design factors and configurations are not tower acceptance rules and should not be transferred to a wind product. The tower needs its own applicable structural assessment.

Compare practical structural alternatives

Ask which tower sections are controlled by local instability and what geometric and fabrication assumptions support the resistance. Changes in thickness, diameter, local stiffening or detail geometry can affect both buckling and overall dynamics.

Do not judge two towers only by steel grade or total mass. Also do not flatten a dent, add a stiffener or accept a wall imperfection from this FAQ. The responsible designer must assess the actual condition and configuration. For a MARSTON installation, coordinate the selected turbine loads with the tower supplier’s verified section design and fabrication requirements.
