Why should assumed damping be justified in a wind tower dynamic calculation?
The short answer
Predicted response near resonance can be strongly sensitive to damping. An assumed value therefore needs a stated source and a compatible operating condition. Material, joints, ground and aerodynamic effects can contribute differently, so damping from another tower or from normal generation should not automatically be applied to a parked or incomplete assembly.
Identify the damping being represented
Modal damping describes energy dissipation for a particular mode and model. It is not necessarily a material property that remains unchanged when connections, foundation stiffness or equipment state changes.
A test estimate should identify the mode, amplitude, configuration and analysis method. A free-decay result from a bare tower may not describe an installed turbine with a moving rotor or different support conditions.
Test whether the assumption controls the outcome
Near resonance, modest changes in damping can produce substantial changes in predicted amplitude. Away from resonance, the same uncertainty may have less consequence. The value of refining damping evidence therefore depends on the response being assessed.
Compare a justified range while holding excitation and other model inputs consistent. Do not tune damping simply until the calculated displacement falls below a desired limit; that replaces evidence with an outcome-driven assumption.
Keep operating states separate
Aerodynamic contributions can depend on rotor state and inflow, while connection behavior can depend on load amplitude. The relevant damping basis should therefore accompany each governing dynamic case.
Ask which uncertainty remains and whether it affects tower selection, temporary support or the need for additional controlled testing. Any test or mitigation requires an appropriate engineered plan. A general damping percentage is not provided here, and MARSTON electric yaw capability does not establish the damping of the tower-foundation assembly. The decision should rest on a defensible response assessment for the actual state being reviewed.
