Why can a tower frequency test before turbine installation give a different result?

The short answer

Installing the turbine changes supported mass and inertia, and completing the installation can change restraints and interfaces. A bare-tower modal test therefore characterizes a different structural state from the assembled turbine. Its results can still be useful, but only through a comparison that accounts for those differences rather than treating the two frequencies as interchangeable.

Define both tested configurations

Record which tower sections, head components, platforms and temporary supports were present. Identify the base condition, grout state and guy arrangement where applicable. A temporary erection brace can materially alter a mode even though it is absent from the finished structure.

The measurement’s identified mode also matters. Two peaks at different stages are not automatically the same tower bending mode simply because both are the lowest visible peak.

Use a model that reproduces each state

A useful comparison predicts the bare configuration and the completed configuration with consistent structural properties. If the bare-tower model cannot reproduce the relevant test evidence within its justified uncertainty, explain that discrepancy before relying on its assembled prediction.

Adding a head mass will often lower a bending frequency, but changes in boundary conditions or coupling can complicate the result. A simple mass-scaling correction is not automatically adequate.

Establish what the earlier test can prove

The bare test may help evaluate tower stiffness or an assumed support condition. It cannot directly verify every assembled mode, operating damping contribution or excitation response. Additional evidence should target the remaining uncertainty that affects acceptance.

Ask the structural reviewer to identify which assumptions were validated and which remain predictions. Do not conduct improvised excitation tests on an operating turbine. The practical outcome is a traceable structural comparison between defined states, not a claim that a pre-installation frequency certificate proves complete dynamic suitability of the MARSTON installation.
