Small wind / Buyer questions
Purchasing and delivery
Which subcontracted components should a wind equipment supplier identify?
The short answer
Ask for disclosure where an outsourced component affects an agreed interface, inspection requirement, maintainability or replacement route. The objective is traceability and assigned responsibility, not a list of every commodity supplier. Define the required disclosure depth before comparing offers, and distinguish supplier approval from a product certification claim.
Identify relevant purchased interfaces
A useful disclosure schedule can include the component description, manufacturer, model or part reference, revision, responsible integrating supplier and supporting documents. Prioritize assemblies whose identity affects electrical compatibility, structural interfaces, service instructions or the agreed test evidence. The actual list depends on the selected system. Do not assume that every MARSTON configuration uses the same generator, controller or converter arrangement, and do not infer their manufacturers from photographs or an earlier unrelated order.
Keep integration responsibility visible
Outsourcing an assembly does not by itself explain who verifies the assembled wind system. Ask who checks matching drawings, resolves conflicting instructions and provides support when two suppliers disagree. State which records the buyer receives and which remain controlled by the integrating supplier. A confidential commercial supply chain can still have an agreed route for identity verification and technical review. If a relevant identity is withheld, record the remaining evidence gap rather than invent a substitute assurance.
Control changes after disclosure
Require proposed changes to identified components to enter the project's change process before use. Review consequential documents, spare references, test coverage and service capability. Preserve the original and replacement identities in the asset history. The resulting record should let an operator order a compatible replacement and identify the correct instructions years later. It is more useful than a brand list that is never reconciled with the equipment actually manufactured and delivered to the project.
