Small wind / Buyer questions
Purchasing and delivery
How can unanswered technical queries delay a wind equipment order?
The short answer
Track each technical query against the manufacturing or installation decision it blocks. Give it an owner, a required response date and a defined closure criterion. Silence is unresolved information unless the parties have expressly established another process; a general promised delivery date does not remove the underlying engineering dependency.
Connect queries to real work
A query register should show the question, applicable document revision, affected interface and next dependent activity. A request for a missing connection dimension may prevent foundation or support detailing; a request for document formatting may not. Classifying those differences helps the team focus on the decisions that govern release. Ask the responsible engineer to identify whether the issue blocks all work, one assembly, a purchase of material, or only a later review step.
Set an actionable response expectation
Request a specific deliverable: a revised drawing, confirmed limit, interface table or supported explanation. A reply that merely acknowledges receipt does not resolve the engineering question. If the first answer introduces another assumption, keep the original issue open and document the new dependency. When a deadline cannot be met, ask for a revised decision date and its schedule effect. Avoid reporting every overdue query as an equal delay to the whole project.
Close with evidence and communication
Record the accepted answer and approving reviewer, then link it to affected drawings, orders or procedures. Tell the teams that relied on the old information what has changed. If the issue is deliberately deferred, document the interim boundary and who owns the remaining decision. The resulting record separates true closure from administrative response. It also gives procurement a concrete basis for discussing a schedule adjustment without guessing which unanswered messages actually affected production.
